Macel
wins
THE toughest Ironman in the world

Haute Alpes, France - August 15, 2010
A rare rest for the T-Mac team last weekend has worked wonders as a small squad of athletes lined up for the Embrunman, perhaps THE toughest Ironman distance race in the world.

Starting off with the women, Tereza Macel (CZE) was a last minute entry after getting the nod from her coach. With little time to worry about the grueling challenge ahead, Macel obliterated the women's field coming home in 1st in a time of 11:20:10, almost 40 minutes ahead of second place.

How did she do it? Swimming like a fish in 48:15 to exit in the lead pack, then riding her bike over the 188 kilometer mountainous course in 6:45:20 and finally she completed the race, running home in 3:42:01.

  New Triathlon Summer Program for Kids
  The North York Aquatic Club is pleased to announce the formation of the NYAC Triathlon Team. This team was created to introduce our swimmers to the sport of triathlon. Our aim is to provide our young athletes with an opportunity to participate in a fun summer sport that will compliment their swim training.

This program is centered around participation in a number of Kids of Steel Triathlon races in and around Toronto over the summer months. We have selected five races that the kids can choose to participate, doing only one or as many as all five if they wish.

We will be offering a triathlon clinic before the season starts to introduce the sport and teach some triathlon fundamentals. We will also be offering a two day clinic in early July in Collingwood for athletes 11 years of age and older.

Previous experience is not required, this program is all about fun and participation, and we encourage all the kids to come out and try their hand at this sport.

Conquering all Opportunities with the right Skills

Provincial 1 Group Short Course Report

March 2010
  "Some say opportunity knocks only once, that is not true. Opportunity knocks all the time, but you have to be ready for it. If the chance comes, you must have the equipment to take advantage of it." ~ Louis L'Amour (1908-1988)

One cannot take advantage of any opportunity if the proper skills and knowledge were not acquired beforehand. Our Provincial 1 swimmers have experienced this throughout the past 6 months. Every swim meet is an opportunity. But they have yet to find the right 'equipment' to conquer the meet.

NYAC TriKids
  TriKids Splashing Through a Wet August
August 31, 2010

August proved to be a wet triathlon month with both Barrie and Orillia competitions being overcast and rainy. In Barrie, the NYAC tri-kids numbered few (Jackie, Sasha, Katy, Kiana, Riley, Jack and Molly) but they were all up for the challenge of rain-slick roads, speeding through inches of freshly made puddles, and maintaining their concentration on their road bikes, while facing large rain pellets. Rain-filled running shoes didn't deter them from putting in best performances. The race must go on, despite the weather. The Orillia Kids of Steele competition, held two weeks later, on Saturday, August 21, was overcast with dark clouds hovering over the kids but this time the rain held off until the last competitor finished. The rain was saved for the next day as the NYAC parents and coaches competed. NYAC triathlon relay team members, Bill Martin (the bike), Katy Martin (the swim) and Connie Yang (the run) got to experience true triathlon competition while facing the unrelenting downpour. Coach Lynn and Coach Leon were in fine form competing in their rain-soaked triathlon suits and shoes while Coach Dave watched from the sidelines with an umbrella in hand and warm dry clothes. But, Coach Dave must be excused for not participating in Orillia, given his hectic training schedule in preparation for the Masters World championship in Budapest, Hungary in early September. Let's hope that we see some better triathlon weather next month.
  NYAC TriKids Camp at
Blue Mountain and Georgian Bay

July 11, 2010

The NYAC TriKids held its first overnight camp with great success. The kids enjoyed the warm waters of Georgian Bay for fitness swims, the hot but fun-filled runs in the woods of Georgian Peeks, a 23km bike ride on the roads of Blue Mountain, and to top it all off, a final mini-triathlon on the final day of the camp. Coach Dave gave tips on running, swimming and biking technique. Coach Leon provided instruction on bike safety and demonstrated proper cadence on the bike, provided instruction on running through the water for the open water start and pushed the stragglers towards the finish of the sweat-filled runs. Coach Lynn provided encouragement and ran, biked and swam alongside the kids. Thanks to the adult volunteers this first NYAC tri-camp was a rewarding experience for all of the NYAC TriKid campers. The results of the Oakville triathlon held on Sunday, July 11, show that the NYAC TriKids are strong, fit and have learned a lot about triathlons.

  NYAC TriKids open the season
with Clinic and Competition
May 29, 2010

  On Saturday, May 29 the NYAC TriKids started their season by attending their first triathlon clinic, learning the fundamentals about participating in a triathlon. The kids learned about the transition zone, shammy shorts, triathlon fast drying suits, baby powder for shoes, quick release shoe laces, designated mounting and dismounting areas, racking your bike, race numbers and of course race strategy - doing your best. The next day, Sunday, May 30, the triathletes were off to Caledon, many of whom would be competing in their first triathlon. Their coaches, Dave, Brent, Leon and Paul had prepared them well, but the scorching heat added an element of difficulty to the race. Overall the kids did great, and had a lot of fun as they kicked off their triathlon season with a bang. Congratulations to all of Sunday's competitors on their excellent efforts. All the kids represented NYAC well! Good job!

Head Coach Message
June 2010
  Swimming coaches describe the efficiency of great stroke technique by using examples from various walks of life. I have heard coach Bergen in Etobicoke talk about horses when he tried to match stroke length and stroke rate. Later he went on to race them professionally. In the past, Russian coach Gennadi Touretski, used the analogy of a fish to describe the rigidity in Alexander Popov's slippery smoothness through the water. Recently, the renowned physiologist, Dr. Bob Treffene used a cheetah to illustrate the relaxed motion of the paw recovery at 100 mph before he put up his graphs and charts on training design at the Toronto Lecture Series that I attended.   NYAC Intro2 Group in the Spotlight

May 2010

There are four Intro groups in NYAC. Upon successful completion of the Waves program, the swimmers are then promoted to the Intro level of swimming which now offers opportunities to participate in competition. From all four groups the swimmers are aiming for an E cut or above and ultimately to qualify for Central Regions. The majority of the swimmers in Intro are within the age range of 8 - 12. When coaching swimmers within this age range, it is essential that the kids have FUN. Kids at this age need to enjoy what they are doing and do it out of their passion and love for the sport.   National Development Group's Championship Meets:
Opportunities to Create Belief

Meet Report: National Development Group

March 2010

Swimmers must have a rock solid belief in themselves and their ability to perform. They need to have others believe in them - coaches, parents, teammates, and friends. This becomes contagious and gradually builds enthusiasm, resilience and all of the other psychological and emotional skills needed to move on to become a successful national level swimmer.

  Online Officiating Clinics

Parents, siblings, relatives and friends of NYAC swimmers are encouraged to enrol in one of the Swim Ontario (SO) officials online clinics. At this time SO offers the Timers, Strokes and Turns (head lane timer), and Chief Timers clinic online.

Just a reminder that each NYAC family is required to have one person qualified as a timekeeper and one person qualified as a strokes and turns (head lane timer) judge.

Latest Release

The Ontario Swim Officials Association (OSOA) has now also released the five remaining level 2 officiating clinics that can be taken online. These courses include:

* Chief Judge Electronics
* Chief Finish Judge
* Clerk of Course
* Recorder Scorer
* Meet Management

This is a great opportunity for our families to diversify their officiating skills and move "up the ladder" of officiating. This is critical as all clubs are required by Swim Ontario to have officials at senior levels.

Completing these courses is also of great assistance to our club as these are critical positions in hosting a meet.

These courses can be taken by anyone who has completed the level 1 timers course.

Please consider taking the time to complete one (or more) of these courses.

Contact Brent Lockridge at bklockridge<at>sympatico.ca for more information and to obtain the enrolment password for the Swim Ontario clinic site.
