Tereza Macel wins THE toughest Ironman in the world

Haute Alpes, France - August 15, 2010
A rare rest for the T-Mac team last weekend has worked wonders as a small squad of athletes lined up for the Embrunman, perhaps THE toughest Ironman distance race in the world.

Starting off with the women, Tereza Macel (CZE) was a last minute entry after getting the nod from her coach. With little time to worry about the grueling challenge ahead, Macel obliterated the women's field coming home in 1st in a time of 11:20:10, almost 40 minutes ahead of second place.

How did she do it? Swimming like a fish in 48:15 to exit in the lead pack, then riding her bike over the 188 kilometer mountainous course in 6:45:20 and finally she completed the race, running home in 3:42:01.

Intro2 Group in the Spotlight

Profile by Rebecca Suen
Coach: Intro2 Group

May 2010

There are four Intro groups in NYAC. Upon successful completion of the Waves program, the swimmers are then promoted to the Intro level of swimming which now offers opportunities to participate in competition. From all four groups the swimmers are aiming for an E cut or above and ultimately to qualify for Central Regions. The majority of the swimmers in Intro are within the age range of 8 - 12. When coaching swimmers within this age range, it is essential that the kids have FUN. Kids at this age need to enjoy what they are doing and do it out of their passion and love for the sport.

National Development Group's Championship Meets:
Opportunities to Create Belief

Meet Report: National Development Group

March 2010

Swimmers must have a rock solid belief in themselves and their ability to perform. They need to have others believe in them - coaches, parents, teammates, and friends. This becomes contagious and gradually builds enthusiasm, resilience and all of the other psychological and emotional skills needed to move on to become a successful national level swimmer.

Conquering all Opportunities with the right Skills

Provincial 1 Group Short Course Report

March 2010
"Some say opportunity knocks only once, that is not true. Opportunity knocks all the time, but you have to be ready for it. If the chance comes, you must have the equipment to take advantage of it." ~ Louis L'Amour (1908-1988)

One cannot take advantage of any opportunity if the proper skills and knowledge were not acquired beforehand. Our Provincial 1 swimmers have experienced this throughout the past 6 months. Every swim meet is an opportunity. But they have yet to find the right 'equipment' to conquer the meet.

Building Stepping Stones

National Development Group
Youth Cup and Guelph Meet Reports

December 2009

There is really the only genuine stepping stone to high achievement. The risk is great, for failure can bring with it many burdensome and highly toxic consequences. You can lose your nerve, your focus, your confidence, and your competitive spirit. However without challenge, the truth is you never really discover or develop the toughness, the determination, the persistence, the resilience to become a truly fierce competitor. Read more...

Julia Just Off World Record
Julia Wilkinson came within 0.48 of the world record winning the 100m IM at the 2009 British SC Grand Prix in Leeds UK. However, her time of 59:28 set a new Canadian record. ‘’I’m happy but not satisfied,’’ said Wilkinson. ‘’I was gunning for the world record and just missed it by less than a half second. My turns were a lot better in the final and my breaststroke to freestyle transition was very strong. I probably needed just a bit more training.’’ Wilkinson underwent shoulder surgery last fall and only returned to training this spring. Michelle Williams placed 2nd in the B final and set a new NYAC record for the 100m Fly with a time of 1:00.49. This improves the previous record of 1:02.31 held by Mich MacPherson since 1982.

2009 Spring National Championships

Meet Report

March 2009

NYAC was proud to co-host the 2009 Spring National Championships with the Toronto Swim Club at the Univeristy of Toronto pool. Most exciting was watching the women's 200m breaststroke where Annamay Pierse broke a world record on the last night.

NYAC swimmer Michele Williams made her first top 8 swim in the 100m freestyle swimming with a best time of 54:86. This time also earned her a spot on Team Ontario for the Canada Games to be held in PEI this summer.

We all are greatful to our volunteer NYAC parents who helped to make this event a big success.
NYAC should be proud of a job very well done.

March: Time to
Refocus and Revitalize

President's
Message

March 2009

This month, in harmony with the CS4L Parents Guide and Swimming Canada, Swim Ontario has deemed March a "Refocus and Revitalization Period". In swim parent language this means that there is not a single sanctioned swim meet for our swimmers outside of Spring Nationals. During this time of reflection, let's remember why our kids swim; to have fun, to make and develop friendships, do something they are good at, to feel good about themselves, to feel accepted, and to improve and learn new skills.

Welcome from our new
Head Age Group Coach
September 2008

Greetings to all new and returning families to NYAC’s 2008-2009 swim season. I’m very excited to welcome you all as our club continues to grow in all levels of swimming. As the Head Age Group Coach, I have the privilege to work with all the coaches from Wave, Intro, Age, Youth and Provincial levels in standardizing a progressive program across all groups that swim at 7 different pools within North York. A lot of work has been done last year to create a unified and consistent program structure that our swimmers have benefited in. They were able to experience different styles of coaching and develop a variety of skills taught by different coaches. The unity of the groups generates cohesiveness that translates to a sense of belonging in our big NYAC family.

This year, we will continue in standardizing our programs at different levels and locations. My goal is to develop a structure where all our swimmers will fit appropriately within a hierarchy that they can work towards becoming provincial contenders.

During the season, if you have any questions in regards to group structure, move-ups, feedback on our coaches and practices, please feel free to email me at nyac.sabrina@gmail.com

I wish you all a great season.

GO NYAC!

Sabrina Ng
Head Age Group Coach
