for the World Championships Trials
NYAC
salutes Julia Wilkinson, Michelle Williams, Caitlin Hodge
and Kyungsoo Yoon! These fine NYAC athletes just finished competing at
Swimming Canada's flagship event of the summer: the World Championships Trials
and Senior Nationals. This meet brought together Canada's top swimmers from across
the country.

| |
Julia Wilkinson | At
the trials Julia Wilkinson qualified to compete for Team Canada at the
13th World Aquatic Championships, in Rome, Italy from July 26th to August 2nd,
2009. |
| | After
the meet Michelle Williams was selected on the Senior Canadian B team to
represent Canada at two meets in the UK. This team will compete at the British
Tri-Nations meet against Great Britain and Russia in London on August 1st and
2nd. They will then travel to Leeds to compete at the British Gas Swimming Grand
Prix Short Course Meet on August 6th to 9th, 2009. | Michelle

Drudge, in post-race
conversation with Julia Wilkinson | NYAC
also wishes to congratulate our head coach, Murray Drudge, who was selected
to be a member of the Canadian B team coaching staff, and will also be heading
to the UK. He will be actively involved in all aspects of preparing our Canadian
delegation to race in the UK and he will be there on deck to provide coaching
and leadership to the swimmers.
|
| | This
is all very exciting news for NYAC. We are very proud of Michelle, Julia and Murray.
Overall, the
meet was very successful with NYAC placing in the top ten of all Canadian teams.
Even more exciting is that all four NYAC participants scored points towards the
team tally.
|
| | | Caitlin
Hodge placed 16th in the 1500m freestyle. This is a very encouraging performance
as it was her first time racing at a Senior Nationals. |
| | Also,
Kyungsoo Yoon scored points for Team NYAC, placing 15th in the B final
of the 50m freestyle. | |
| |
Julia
Wilkinson secured her spot to race in Rome by winning the 200m IM with a time
of 2:13.20 which is just off her Canadian record of 2:12.03 set at the 2008 Olympics
in Beijing. Julia will also be a competitor on the Canadian women's 4x200m freestyle
relay and the 4x100m freestyle relay in Rome. Pierre Lafontaine, recently quoted
in the Globe and Mail, said "the Canadian team is a young team - and this
is a good thing because one of the purposes was to get ready for 2012". He
also went on to state "this is really about the next 150 weeks preparing
for the Olympics." Julia's fast racing did not stop at the 200m IM, as she
was also 3rd in 100m backstroke, and 4th in 100 and 200m freestyle. Julia's performance
was also a display of courage and determination as she is still working to regain
her form after a shoulder injury and surgery.
|
| | | Michelle
Williams raced superbly at the trials. This was the first time Michelle placed
top ten in both the 50 and 100m freestyle events. Her time of 55.86 placed her
with the all time top 10 female 100m freestyle sprinters in Canadian history.
Now that's impressive! |
| |
Congratulations
to all of you for doing NYAC proud.
