Recognition of Ginny Smith

By: Swim Nova Scotia - Feb. 26, 2019

Swim Nova Scotia is pleased to announce that Virginia “Ginny” Smith will be awarded the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers. The presentation ceremony will take place during the start of finals on Saturday March 2nd of the 2019 David Fry Nova Scotia Provincial Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia at Dalplex Pool at approximately 4:45pm.

Ginny Smith has been volunteering with Swim Nova Scotia for over four decades, notably as head coach of the Yarmouth Whitecaps Swim Team, since 1973. Her devotion to the team, in addition to her enthusiastic promotion of respect and comradery, has resonated with swimming communities throughout the Atlantic Provinces. She recently retired in July 2018.

An official Canadian honour, this medal recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of individuals from across the country or abroad, in a wide range of fields. It was created by the Crown; the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers is part of the Canadian Honours System. The program has incorporated and replaced the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award, which was created in 1995, by then-Governor General the Right Honourable Roméo LeBlanc.

Ginny will also be recognized by Swimming Canada as their Volunteer of the Year.
