The few short months since I began coaching the youth group has been both enjoyable and challenging. The group is a great assortment of personalities. Every practice the swimmers create an atmosphere of both fun and hard work. I congratulate them for adapting so well to a new coach at this point in the season. As with any change, there are both pros and cons. Accepting new ways of doing things is not always easy, but the kids have risen to the challenge and are continuing to improve.
Over the past four and a half months, my emphasis has been on how sets have been accomplished. Whether it has been emphasizing a skill such as good turns, or by maintaining technique throughout. At times this has been done at the expense of swimming fewer yards per practice. However, I believe strongly that these swimmers, while they are still young, need to perfect these skills. When they are older, it is far more difficult to make even the slightest stroke improvement. Also swimmers who have flaws in their technique are more likely to get injuries when they increase the training amounts to the levels of what is necessary for success in the teenage years. So at times it may seem we are doing less swimming, in fact, we are working harder than most
swimmers at attaining and maintaining good technique and perfecting our starts and turns. If any swimmers or parents have any questions about how this process is going, I encourage them to ask me. I am more than happy to discuss swimming with anyone interested.
Yours swimmingly,
Steve Downs
